Angels Worshipping in Heaven with Harps and Palmsby CBPepper

Psalms 103:21

Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

The call to bless the Lord is addressed to His hosts and ministers, who are the angels that stand in His presence and listen to do His will. They are mighty and glorious beings, countless in number, holy and joyful, swift and strong to obey His commands around His throne. To bless Him is to do His pleasure, and their service carries out His will throughout His universal kingdom and dominion. They are appointed to minister to His people in every age, guarding them from evil, answering the prayers of the meek, and giving strength and counsel to His workers on earth. They do this willingly and gladly, delighting in obedience without selfishness, and their faithfulness is the pattern for people to do even humble daily duties as service to the Lord.

Heavenly Hosts Identified

The hosts and ministers called to bless the Lord are angels, holy beings who serve as His servants in His heavenly court and presence. They listen to His word and stand ready to do His will and what pleases Him. They belong to the heavenly order through which He carries out His rule, and they are appointed to minister to His people through missions of mercy in every age. They guard His people from evil while remaining in His presence.

They are mighty, powerful and glorious beings, numerous, holy and happy, who attend God's throne and obey His commands. They wait in His presence to carry out His bidding and do what pleases Him. Their service displays strength, glory and swift readiness to act as His messengers.

The call to these hosts shows that God has hosts of angels who serve Him and do His will, proving that holy angels exist as beings distinct from the spirits of dead people. God is not alone in solitary grandeur but is surrounded by countless heavenly ministers who wait to do His bidding and are called to bless Him. These holy beings stand ready to carry out His purposes.

Service in God's Government

To bless the Lord is to do his pleasure, and the summons to all his hosts and ministers to bless him is fulfilled in carrying out that pleasure within the praise of his universal kingdom. The same summons is fulfilled in doing his pleasure within the praise offered by all his works throughout his dominion.

The hosts are his ministers who carry out his will and serve his government. They are mighty, glorious, and numerous beings who attend his throne and obey his commands and his word. They are holy beings who wait in his presence, displaying strength, glory, and swift readiness to act as his messengers. Through them he communicates with every part of his dominion, ready to carry out his purposes.

They are among the heavenly agencies appointed to minister to his people, guarding them from evil while remaining in his presence. Through missions of mercy in every age they minister to his people as his servants. They are appointed to respond to the prayers of the meek on earth and to guide his ministers with counsel and judgment, while heavenly agencies impart grace, strength, and counsel to faithful workers as they share light with the world. They have charge of his work on earth, counseling and directing his people through chosen agents.

Pattern for Earthly Service

The ministers do his pleasure willingly and gladly, blessing him by their service. Their wills and inclinations are in harmony with his, so obedience is delight and not drudgery. They do not serve for wages or for status or from self-interest.

Their faithful doing of his will is the pattern for people on earth. Carrying out everyday duties faithfully in one's appointed place links the earthly worker with the holy beings who serve God above. Even humble duties, when performed as service to the Lord, bring that same linkage with them.

Their delight in doing his will calls people on earth not to hold back. They are first to consecrate themselves to God and then to bring their gifts to his treasury. Their glad blessing of God by doing his will rebukes reluctance in serving God.
