Psalms 104:3
Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
The verse portrays God as very great, clothed with honor and majesty and light, stretching out the heavens like a curtain, laying the beams of His chambers in the waters, making the clouds His chariot and walking upon the wings of the wind. Its surrounding passage presents Him as Creator and Sustainer who laid the earth's foundations, governs the earth and waters, and provides for living creatures. That larger passage belongs to the Bible's account of creation and reveals the divine power made known in Scripture.
The clouds and winds are under His sovereign control and express His will rather than acting as uncontrolled or unregulated forces. Wind and waves act only within His authority, and He can command them to be restrained or released. He holds them back through mighty angels carrying out His bidding to protect people from storms and danger.
Earthquakes, tempests, tornadoes, thunder and lightning are not beyond His direction or merely uncontrolled outbreaks. He permits such calamities with purpose to call people to their senses and to reveal the power, rule and providence He has made known in His Word. Local disturbances in nature serve as signs of what may occur worldwide when the four winds are released.
The verse points to Christ's literal, personal, glorious second coming to earth, when He rides forth upon a cloudy chariot with majesty and power, escorted by angels and accompanied by the Father's glory. The same image of riding in a chariot of clouds applies to the ascent of the saints with Jesus to the holy city, in a cloudy chariot having wings and living wheels. Those who are spared from storms and other dangers should therefore thank Him.
Sung in faith, the passage touches infinity, with the inner glory of God shining forth in word, looks and prayers toward souls ready to perish. Faith is the spiritual hand that lays hold on that infinity, and God takes away infirmities so that faith springs up in the heart carrying healing. With it come the Redeemer's glory and the life and peace from Christ that tune the heart to praise and thanksgiving and to love for Him and one another.
