He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without number,
He spoke, and locusts and caterpillars, that is grasshoppers, came in a swarm without number. They devoured the plants and the fruit throughout Egypt. The verse belongs to the record of Israel's experience when all were under the cloud and all passed through the sea and all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink from the spiritual Rock that followed them, which was Christ, yet with many of them God was not well pleased and they were overthrown in the wilderness.
That history stands as a lesson of warning and an example that God's people in the last days especially need to study. It is to be studied regularly. Psalms 105 and 106 are to be read at least once every week.
With the whole psalm the verse testifies that the Lord is good, that His mercy endures forever, and that His wonderful works to the children of men call for praise and thanksgiving from the redeemed. Its words are to be appropriated to individual experience by taking God at His word and trusting Him without distrust or discouragement. So taken, faith increases and does not diminish, and His Word becomes a stronghold and pledged strength and help in perplexity and trial.
