Israelites Gather Quail in the WildernessBible World

Psalms 105:40

The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

Psalm 105:40 belongs to the recorded history of Israel in the wilderness under the cloud and through the sea. In that setting the people ate the same spiritual meat and drank the same spiritual drink from the spiritual Rock that followed them, which was Christ, yet with many of them God was not well pleased and they were overthrown in the wilderness. The verse reports that when the people asked, God brought quails and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

The bread of heaven is manna, angels' food, the best food to keep them pure, holy, and healthy and to lengthen life. It was given to educate, discipline, and train them into correct habits of simple fruits, vegetables, and grains. God withheld flesh meat because it is not man's natural food and would produce disease and shorten life. He would have given flesh if it had been essential for health, since as Creator and Redeemer He understood the effect of flesh-eating on the human system. He wanted to bring them into Canaan and establish them there as a pure, holy, happy people with not one feeble among their tribes because He would take away all sickness.

Israel was not hungry but, accustomed to the flesh food and flesh-pots of Egypt, was not pleased with heaven's provision. They wept, mourned, murmured, and complained, tempting God in the heart by asking meat for lust and distrusting His salvation and power to furnish a table. The Lord heard and was angry and wroth, and gave them their desire with flesh rained as dust until they were filled. While the meat was yet in their mouths His wrath slew the fattest and chosen men, proving that defiling the body temple brings destruction.

The verse reveals God's goodness, mercy, and love in His provision for Israel. All who claim to be children of God are to read it carefully, take its words into personal experience, and appreciate that goodness. They are to trust the Lord, rely on His word, and let faith increase rather than diminish. That wilderness experience, including this provision and overthrow, serves as a warning example for God's people in the last days especially, not to lust after evil things and to recognize the danger from appetite. Psalms 105 and 106 are to be read at least once every week. The bread of heaven is also an image of the spiritual nourishment offered to rich and poor through the sanitariums, and God's purpose is to bring His people back to that simple diet.
