Psalms 106:1

Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Praise ye the Lord, O give thanks unto the Lord, is a call to all who claim to be God's children to praise Him and give Him thanks because He is good and His mercy endures forever. His goodness and His enduring mercy are presented as reasons for gratitude and rejoicing. Appreciating His goodness, mercy, and love is necessary, and studying Israel's history in Psalm 106 helps appreciate them more fully. Those who are willing and obedient and have received the teaching of the Holy Spirit rejoice in the Lord and give Him thanks.

Psalm 106 records Israel's experience and contains lessons of warning that God's people in the last days especially need to study. It records their experience under the cloud and through the sea, eating the same spiritual meat and drinking the same spiritual drink from Christ the Rock, yet being overthrown in the wilderness. Because of its warning lessons, Psalm 106 should be read at least once every week.

The verse was sung as a thanksgiving of praise during the feast, declaring that the Lord is good and His mercy endures forever. The song accompanied the worshipers' rejoicing after confession of sin and the declaration that they were at peace with Heaven. Thanks to the Lord for His goodness and enduring mercy is the fitting cry of one healed of leprosy. The cleansed leper, once shut out from others as unclean and now made clean by the compassionate touch of the Saviour, lays his untainted garments in the Saviour's path during the triumphal entry into Jerusalem and exclaims the verse in grateful homage to the mighty healer.
