Psalms 106:40

Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

The verse belongs to the account of Israel's history in Psalm 106, which with Psalms 105 and 107 is to be read carefully to appreciate God's goodness, mercy, and love, and all who claim to be children of God should learn from them the necessity of such appreciation. The Lord's wrath was kindled and He abhorred His inheritance because of Israel's rebellion, continued disobedience, and apostasy in mingling with the nations, serving their idols, shedding blood, and abandoning God's ways for heathen practices. Their idolatry and bloodshed provoked His anger, and their choice to mix with the nations and follow their ways brought downfall until rejection followed.

As a result He withdrew His strength and gave them into the power of the nations they might have subdued. He gave the people into the power of the nations that hated them, where they were oppressed, ruled over, and brought into subjection. Their downfall continued until they became prey to the nations whose ways they had chosen. Their choice brought sin and its consequences upon the land and separated them from God.

When they cried out, He remembered His covenant and showed them mercy. Even after anger against rebellion and idolatry had given them into oppression and subjection under other nations, crying out brought remembrance of the covenant and mercy.

The record of Israel's experience in Psalm 106 provides warning lessons for God's people in the last days and should be studied, especially. Psalm 106, together with Psalm 105, records Israel's failures as such a warning and is to be studied regularly so they will not repeat Israel's sins. Israel's history warns by showing that God was displeased with many of them and they were overthrown in the wilderness.
