Psalms 107:12

Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.

The verse belongs to the history of Israel as recounted in the psalm, which is commended to be read for its testimony. It pictures people sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and iron. Because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High, He brought down their heart with labor, so that they fell down helpless with no one to aid them.

In that helpless fallen condition they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He saves them out of their distresses. He brings them out of darkness and the shadow of death and breaks their bonds apart, breaking the gates of brass and cutting the bars of iron in sunder. The verse thus displays His goodness, mercy, and love, His loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men, calling for appreciation of them and for praise to Him for them.
