Jesus Asleep in the Boat as the Storm Ragesby CBPepper

Psalms 107:23

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

The psalm containing this verse records Israelite history and, when studied together with Psalms 105 and 106, deepens appreciation of God's goodness, mercy, and love. The verse describes people who travel, sail, and carry on business on the sea and great waters, with its setting on the open ocean. Those who travel and work on the sea witness God's wonderful works there.

Life on the sea involves danger from storms, waves, and winds, so ships and their passengers depend on God's power, protection, and rule over sea and wind. Deliverance from the dangers of the sea is a reason for gratitude to God. God is able to hold back waves that threaten to overwhelm His children. Passengers who pray may be guarded by unseen angels during peril at sea. Many shipwrecks occur because those entrusted with the safety of others drink liquor.

The verse applies to a traveler who had circled the world three times and had been delivered by the Lord from many dangers on the great waters. The hazards of a voyage picture danger and uncertainty in life, where trusting in the Lord is the only safety when winds blow and the vessel rocks, for Jesus is aboard and His word brings calm and steadiness, carrying His people through every gale safely to harbor.

People reached by going down to the sea are to receive the work of those who make God's salvation known, as part of the mission Israel failed to fulfill of bringing God's light to the Gentiles and revealing Christ's kingdom to the world.
