Small Boat in a Storm at Seaby sanjalberts

Psalms 107:29

He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

The psalm around this verse draws attention to God's goodness, mercy, and love. God rules the sea, quiets the storm, stills its waves, and brings those caught in it to calm and safety. This power belongs to Jesus as Commander over wind and waves, who with His voice can still a raging hurricane and who on earth held back winds, controlled tempests, and calmed the angry sea, keeping His followers brave amid danger and bringing them safely to land.

The forces of nature act under God's jurisdiction, and at His command angels can hold back winds and waves to preserve people from destruction. His keeping power restrains threatening waves that would otherwise destroy and engulf His children. The Lord has His way in both storm and calm, and His purpose goes forward despite interruptions that human wisdom cannot foresee or prevent. Jesus is aboard the vessel of those who trust Him, and when it rocks in the winds of trouble He brings calm and steadiness that enables them to endure the gale and reach safety. This teaches trust in the Lord rather than reliance on human wisdom.

Spiritually, the verse shows that Jesus quiets the storm within the soul troubled by sin, as His grace reconciles the soul to God, quiets and subdues human passions, and gives rest and deliverance to those who call on Him and turn to Him. The stilled waves picture the peace that follows when sin is renounced and the heart receives Christ's love. God speaks to the heart in the storm, in the waves, and in the calm that follows, and deliverance from rough water into stillness reveals a mighty Ruler who is the source of all power and from whose heart flows infinite love and blessing to the creatures of His care.

This deliverance calls those who are spared to gratitude, worship, and thanks. It leaves no place for setting the human will against God's will, disobeying His commands, or contending with the Most High.
