Psalms 107:40

He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

The verse applies when God's people have been brought low and diminished, bowed down under oppression and trouble and sorrow. It is for that condition of humiliation and affliction that its promise of reversal is given. In that condition God pours contempt upon princes, putting them to shame. He causes them to wander in a pathless waste, in a wilderness where there is no way. At the same time He lifts the needy on high out of affliction and delivers them from their suffering. He makes families for them like a flock, multiplying and prospering them. The upright see this double work and are glad, while all wickedness is stopped and silenced.
