Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
The verse is a prayer for deliverance in time of trouble, asking God for help on the ground that assistance from man is empty and useless. It is to be offered sincerely, in humble and fervent seeking of God, especially when undoing what was done in self-confidence. Such praying means turning away from human wisdom and from self-reliance to full dependence upon God. That dependence is lived out when brethren counsel together and treat one another with respect even where they differ in judgment. In that atmosphere the Spirit of Christ works to bring confession of wrongs and true conversion.
