David Stands Steadfast Above Saul's Archersby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 11:2

For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

The wicked bend the bow and fit the arrow to the string to shoot in secret at those who are upright in heart. The wicked are Saul and his helpers hunting David, and David is the one upright in heart under attack. Jonathan had met David in his refuge in the wood and assured him that Saul would not find him and that he would be king over Israel. David then sang this psalm with voice and harp as a song of praise to encourage his own soul in trust in the Lord.

That secret preparation prompts fearful counsel to flee as a bird to the mountain and raises the question what the righteous can do when the foundations are destroyed. Envy and malice sharpen these secret attacks of the wicked upon the just. Trust in the Lord stands firm because the Lord is in His holy temple with His throne in heaven, His eyes beholding and testing the children of men. He tries the righteous, while His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. The portion of their cup for the wicked will be snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest, for the righteous Lord loves righteousness and His countenance beholds the upright. The upright are therefore to keep trusting God and doing what is right, confident that the Lord will deliver them and vindicate their righteousness.
