Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
Unto the upright light arises in darkness. God brings light to the upright in their darkness, and will lead them from darkness into light. The darkness is spiritual, being separation from God, involving sin and ignorance of His character, and sin belongs to darkness. The light is Christ, who is the light and life of the world, and His coming brought that light into the darkness.
When Christ came, the Jewish rulers rejected that light. When the light shone, those who rejected His words did not comprehend it. The upright in Heaven's sight include the honest in heart in heathen lands. No sincere soul longing for something higher will be disappointed, for God reveals Himself to those who pray in faith amid discouraging surroundings, brings them into touch with providences that establish confidence in Him, delivers the captives of the mighty, calls prisoners of hope to the stronghold, and brings the blind by a way they did not know, leading them in paths they have not known, making darkness light before them and crooked things straight, and not forsaking them.
After Jesus died, while He lay in the tomb, the disciples in grief and uncertainty were not forsaken, and God would lead them from sorrow and darkness toward understanding and light and the sight of His righteousness. The verse also describes the upright person as gracious and full of compassion and righteous. Those who obey God's commands and live by pure, heaven-born principles have in this light a safeguard and a standard of purity, and their example can guide others. Those who seek the light and gladly accept it receive the bright rays that shine from God's throne. The verse is to be recalled in praise when tempted to find fault.
