A Man Gives Bread to the Poorby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 112:9

He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.

The verse describes the righteous person as one who has dispersed abroad, scattering gifts and giving generously, freely, willingly and cheerfully to the poor, and declares that his righteousness endures and remains forever. That giving to the poor is itself an expression of enduring righteousness, applied both to material help for need and to the sharing of spiritual gifts. That enduring righteousness is sustained because God makes all grace abound toward the giver, giving him always all sufficiency in all things so that he may abound to every good work. He ministers seed to the sower and bread for food, multiplies the seed sown, increases the fruits of righteousness, and enriches him in everything to all bountifulness. He supplies what is needed and cares for the seed sown so that it produces further fruit and he can continue doing good.

The giver's bountifulness supplies the needs and want of others and of the saints and abounds in good works, and this causes thanksgiving and praise to God. Generous giving that supplies others' needs leads to thanksgiving being offered to God. The verse applies to willing, cheerful and free generosity, including faithful stewards who continually give gifts and offerings to God's work. In 2 Corinthians 9 the verse supports the promise that God enables cheerful, abundant giving and increases its fruits. The verse is illustrated by those who, though in great affliction and deep poverty, first gave themselves to the Lord and then abounded to riches of liberality.
