That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.
To be set among princes was taken to mean that God would through the Messiah lift the Jewish nation to earthly power and rank its people with rulers. The hope attached to it was for a kingdom that would break and overthrow Roman rule and raise Judah to supremacy over other nations. That worldly expectation was a false, earthly reading that misrepresented the character of Christ's kingdom and mission. It was not the work foretold of Him.
In truth to be set with princes means that God raises a person to that place by giving sanctified wisdom that exalts. That wisdom is not given while one refuses the apparently humble path God marks out and chooses a spirit, course, and actions that do not glorify God. It is given when one recognizes the Lord's hand and voice and no longer waits for the Lord to humble him but humbles himself under God's mighty hand. Then, admitting lack of the wisdom that exalts, he seeks the Lord with whole heart, mind, and soul, studies the life of Christ with sanctified vision, and accepts the Lord's ways and glorifies Him.
