Psalms 114:8

Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

Our heavenly Father has power to turn the flinty rock into a life-giving and refreshing stream, into life-giving and refreshing streams. He is able and eager to manifest Himself in emergency and to reveal the abundant supplies at His people's disposal, independent of their surroundings. He longs to make Himself known in emergencies.

In mercy He leads Christians to a Rephidim in their experience and does not always place them in the easiest places, with green pastures and cooling streams. He does this in order to test their faithfulness and loyalty, lest in self-sufficiency they forget that He is their helper in time of necessity. He permits disappointment, privation, and grievous trial to come, permitting disappointment and trial, so they realize their own helplessness and learn to call upon Him for aid as a hungry and thirsty child calls upon its earthly father. They are to bring their burdens to Him with childlike faith instead of doubting whether He is with them. The full number of burdens He has borne for His children, and would gladly have borne if they had brought them to Him with childlike faith, will never be known until they are face to face with God, seeing as they are seen and knowing as they are known.
