A Man Kneels at a Grave in a Churchyardby KandD

Psalms 115:17

The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

The dead do not praise God but go down into the silence of the grave, where they are unconscious and inactive and know nothing. In death there is no remembrance of God and no thanks or celebration, for in the very day of death thoughts perish and the dead have no more share in anything done under the sun. Neither do the righteous enter heaven at death to praise with immortal tongues nor do the wicked go at death to their punishment, but both sleep until the resurrection when the righteous awaken to glorious immortality. For the weary righteous this sleep is blessed rest in which time, whether long or short, feels but a moment until the trump of God awakens them. Claims that deceased loved ones return as spirits to speak and act are not messages from the dead but soul-destroying deceptions worked by Satan, which disproves the doctrine of consciousness in death built on natural immortality.

Death Is Silent Unconsciousness

The dead do not praise the Lord, but go down into the silence of the grave, where they lie unconscious and inactive. They are not conscious spirits who know what happens on earth or who communicate with the living, so claims that deceased loved ones speak and act are deceptions and not messages from the dead. The righteous dead do not enter heaven at death to praise God, but await the resurrection. This contradicts the belief that they are already in heaven praising Him, and disproves the popular theology that they have entered into bliss to praise Him with an immortal tongue and the doctrine of consciousness in death built on natural immortality.

In death there is no remembrance of God, and in the grave none give Him thanks. Those who go down into silence cannot celebrate Him or hope for His truth, but only the living praise Him. This agrees with Hezekiah's song that the grave cannot praise God and death cannot celebrate Him. For this reason the dead do not go to heaven at death to praise God with an immortal tongue, because they are not conscious in death.

In the very day of death man's thoughts perish, the dead know nothing, and they have no more share in anything done under the sun, with no awareness of earthly life or of what happens under the sun. They cannot watch earthly life, communicate with friends on earth, give valuable information, or perform wonders. The claim that the dead know everything and commune with the living is a soul-destroying delusion worked by Satan with all deceivableness of unrighteousness, and Satan's power to carry Christ to the pinnacle of the temple and to an exceeding high mountain to show Him the kingdoms of the world proves he can exercise his power upon the human family who are far inferior in strength and wisdom. Neither the righteous go to their reward nor the wicked to their punishment at death, but they sleep until the resurrection, when the righteous awaken to glorious immortality. For the weary righteous this sleep is blessed rest in which time, whether long or short, feels but a moment, until the trump of God awakens them with their thoughts resumed where they ceased at the pang of death.

Sleep Until Resurrection and Judgment

The dead do not go to heaven at death to praise with an immortal tongue, for they go down into silence and remain unconscious rather than entering into bliss. This contradicts the belief that the righteous dead are already in heaven praising God, since in death there is no remembrance and in the grave none give thanks, celebrate, or hope for truth, but only the living praise Him. The grave cannot praise and death cannot celebrate, in agreement with Hezekiah's song.

Neither the righteous go to their reward nor the wicked to their punishment at death, but they sleep until the resurrection. Those who go down to the grave are silent and unconscious, with thoughts perishing in the very day of death and knowing nothing more of anything done under the sun, having no awareness of what happens under the sun. At the resurrection the righteous awaken to glorious immortality, and the dead remain asleep until then.

For the weary righteous this sleep is blessed rest, in which time whether long or short feels but a moment. Their thoughts will be resumed where they ceased at the pang of death, until the trump of God awakens them. The wicked dead lie silent in the dust through all the 1000 years after Christ's second coming, destroyed by the brightness of that coming and remaining unconscious and unpunished during the millennium. The final judgment cannot be executed on them until they are raised at the end of the 1000 years and gathered around the camp of the saints, when fire comes down from God out of heaven and devours them.

Refuting Immortality and Spiritism

The dead who have gone down into silence do not praise the Lord, and therefore are not conscious spirits who know what happens on earth or communicate with the living. They have no part in what is done on earth and no more share in anything done under the sun, for they know nothing and give no worship to God. They cannot watch earthly life, know what is happening on earth, communicate with friends on earth, give valuable information, or perform wonders.

Claims that deceased loved ones speak and act, or that the dead return as spirits to speak with relatives, are not messages from the dead but deceptions. The teaching that the dead know everything and commune with the living is a soul-destroying delusion worked by Satan with all deceivableness of unrighteousness. Satan's power to carry Christ to the pinnacle of the temple and to an exceeding high mountain to show Him the kingdoms of the world proves he can exercise his power upon the human family who are far inferior in strength and wisdom.

The verse shows that the dead are not conscious, for none that go down into silence remember God or give Him thanks in the grave. It disproves the popular theology that the righteous dead have entered into bliss in heaven and are praising God with an immortal tongue. It disproves the doctrine of consciousness in death built on natural immortality.
