O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
The verse calls Israel to put trust in the Lord because He is their help and their shield. Because the Lord so protects His people, they have reason not to fear human threats. That assurance holds even when life itself is threatened, declaring that God is the defense of the one in danger. Therefore the threatened one need not fear what people can do to him.
