Psalms 116:1

I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.

Love for the Lord comes because He has heard the voice and supplications, the cries for mercy lifted to Him. His hearing of cries and prayers reveals His loving-kindness and gives cause to love Him and praise Him. Because He has inclined His ear and heard, the response is to call upon Him as long as life lasts.

On the eve of betrayal and death, Jesus used the psalm to express confidence that the Lord heard His supplications, and its following lines call on God for deliverance amid sorrow while trusting in His mercy and help. In sickness and distress this love is known through day-and-night wakeful prayer, casting body, soul and spirit upon God, longing for His blessing with the heart drawn out after Him and trembling at His word. In those wakeful hours encouragement is found by looking to Jesus and recounting His loving acts and loving-kindnesses.

Being heard brings encouragement and deliverance into a broad, open place. Being heard and answered places the receiver under strong obligation to give thanks for favors bestowed and to praise far more. Each blessing received in answer to prayer is to be promptly acknowledged and written down as a lasting record in a diary, so that remembering them continually brings praise to His holy name instead of neglecting gratitude and failing to return praise and thanksgiving for His loving-kindness.
