Psalms 118:6

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

To have the Lord on one's side is to have Him as helper and strength and shield, holding all power and never leaving or forsaking His servants. Confidence and trust in Him therefore gives courage and takes away fear of human threats and opposition, so that no person can ultimately harm or overcome the believer. For that reason there is no need to fear what comes upon the world. Human strength is helpless without God's Spirit, and strength to do God's will and gain victory comes by relying on Jesus and the arm of divine power and growing strong therein, rather than by relying on people.

Leaving reputation and character in the hands of Jesus as Advocate keeps peace under lies, slander, and persecution, in the confidence that God will care for His people and His work despite what others do. Knowing that the Lord stands behind His servant as a helper beyond anyone's reach keeps peace of mind and sustains refusal to retaliate against those who oppose the work. Such confidence sustained Luther when an armed stranger approached him.
