It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes, that is, in human rulers, leaders, advisers, and people generally, for God alone is the sure, safe, and true source of confidence and help. The trust called for is personal reliance on God that frees from fear of people. That reliance rests on His unfailing word and promises, so those who trust Him will not be confounded, ashamed, or betrayed. Even honorable and exalted leaders and those holding positions of trust are not a safe reliance compared with God.
Trust means depending fully on divine truth, seeking God earnestly in prayer, and testing teachings, human ideas, wisdom, and authority by Scripture rather than leaning on personal understanding. It means bringing perplexities, troubles, requests, and daily practical concerns to Him in faith, resting the case with Him. Human counsel and wisdom is unsafe when those giving it are not guided by God. Trusting worldly-wise people for recognition and influence instead of relying on God is weakness and turns a person from the Lord, and disbelief leaves people weak.
While God gives guidance in the right way, strength, grace, personal experience of His presence, confidence that He hears and helps in perplexity, and safety for this life and the life to come. When a mighty hostile host is arrayed against them, God's people are not to rely on men but to trust in the Lord God of Israel, who is on their side with all power. He has separated them to Himself as a peculiar people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, and by that trust they will gain the victory.
Trust means leaning wholly on Christ rather than on princes or the son of man, in whom there is no help. It means looking to Jesus constantly and relying on His goodness and love instead of trusting in people. Leaning on Christ means walking carefully, humbly, and meekly with Him. It means beholding the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world until His lovely image is impressed on the soul, and then revealing Christ to fellow men.
