Psalms 119:104

Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Through God's precepts a person receives understanding. That understanding enables a person to discern, hate, expose and turn away from every false way and every wrong path. It comes by receiving, practicing, keeping and meditating on His Word, which teaches the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error, transforms the character and guides the whole life into harmony with His law. Making His Word the rule of life and the subject of meditation gives wisdom that keeps the true Christian firm as a rock with stronger faith and brighter hope when testing, opposition and persecution reveal the false-hearted professor who wavers and yields. It is the song of a commandment-keeping people in the last days, whose love and loyalty to God's law grow more decided as contempt is placed upon it, while their upholding of its sacredness warns that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will interfere.

Understanding Through Precepts

Through God's precepts a person receives understanding, and that understanding produces hatred for every false way. This understanding enables a person to recognize every false way, to hate it, to expose it and reject it, and to turn against every wrong path. Keeping and meditating on God's word teaches a person to turn from evil and follow what is right.

God's law is a reflection of His character and all His commandments are righteousness, so knowing, learning and keeping His law gives knowledge of God, which is the foundation of all true education. The great work of life is character-building, and the teacher's work is to impart this knowledge of God revealed in His word and to mould character in harmony with it. This understanding comes through receiving, practicing, keeping and meditating on God's Word, which transforms character and guides conduct and the heart into harmony with its teaching and toward keeping His statutes, as seen in the way this instruction shaped David's character and life.

God's Word defines the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error, and His law is to guide the whole of life. Reverently studying the truths in God's Word brings the mind into communion with God and expands and strengthens its powers. In its Psalm 119 setting, loving God's law and meditating in it all the day and keeping His testimonies and precepts makes a person wiser than enemies and gives more understanding than teachers and than the ancients or aged. It gives light and understanding even to the simple, with wondrous things out of His law. Keeping the precepts restrains the feet from every evil way in order to keep God's word, keeps from departing from His judgments because He teaches, and makes His words sweet as honey.

Standing Firm to End

Making God's Word the rule of life and the subject of meditation gives wisdom and understanding that turns the heart against every wrong path and against every false way. That understanding keeps the true Christian firm as a rock with stronger faith and brighter hope when the testing time comes. When opposition, bigotry, intolerance and persecution arise, the difference is revealed between the real Christian who stands firm and the false-hearted, half-hearted and hypocritical professor who wavers and yields the faith.

That steadfastness is like evergreens that remain unchanged when winter blasts strip other trees of their foliage. The verse is the song of a commandment-keeping people in the last days, whose fidelity and loyalty to God's law and whose love for that law grow more decided as contempt is placed upon it. They sing it with happy voices as they proclaim the third angel's message. The understanding that upholds the sacredness of God's law and exposes and rejects every false way stands as a warning that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will certainly interfere and will not acquit the wicked.
