Psalms 119:12

Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.

Blessed is the Lord, and the prayer asks Him to teach His statutes, joining praise to a request for instruction in His law. It belongs to a psalm that exalts God's law, presenting His statutes as sacred and holy instruction to be learned from the Lord Himself. The emphasis is on walking in them and keeping them.

Learning the statutes belongs to seeking God with the whole heart, walking in His ways, and keeping His word. Keeping that word in the heart enables a young person to resist sin and remain faithful when companions urge a different way, since Scripture supplies the answer to pressure to conform. Young men and women are to study these words to awaken the desire to heed the way of the Lord.

The Lord's servants are to offer this prayer continually as the consecration of heart and mind that God asks for. The psalm is to be read with solemn earnestness before a large assembly to set the sacredness of the law before them, in connection with the declaration that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will certainly interfere. Its reading alongside Psalms 126 and 127 underscores that God will ultimately punish defiance of His commandments.
