Psalms 119:125

I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

The speaker is David, who comes as God's servant and obedient child. He asks God to give him understanding so that he may know God's testimonies, for God's servant needs such understanding in order to know them. The asking joins understanding to both knowing God's commandments and obeying them.

To the obedient, God's commandments and testimonies are a delight. The testimonies give counsel, and God's law is to govern the life. Study of God's Word sets out the principles of righteousness and makes plain the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error, while the testimonies turn minds toward that Word.
