Psalm 119 Verses Over a Sunrise Lakeby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 119:129

Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.

God's testimonies are His wonderful Word that upholds His law and gives clear principles to distinguish right from wrong and guide life, and seeing their precious worth moves the soul to keep them. This keeping is done with the whole soul in wholehearted loyalty and willing, cheerful obedience rather than as a galling yoke. Studying, meditating on, and realizing the value of these precious statutes deepens their worth and strengthens obedience that belongs to the knowledge received. The verse describes Christ's commandment-keeping people in the last days, who respect and obey when God's law is widely scorned, despised, and made void amid bold rebellion. That contempt only makes their love and reverence more decided, so they advance in harmony with the great standard singing of their loyalty and proclaiming the keeping of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Wonderful Testimonies Kept

The testimonies are God's Word, and the psalm in which they are called wonderful is a psalm that exalts God's law. That Word gives principles of righteousness that clearly distinguish right from wrong and truth from error, to guide the life and to lead the mind to that Word itself. It points to the sacredness of God's law.

God's testimonies are wonderful and precious, and recognizing their worth moves the soul to keep them as the fitting response. Their wonder is the reason the soul keeps them. Obedient keeping is therefore part of the knowledge received through God's Word.

As a person studies and contemplates the precious statutes of the Most High, meditates upon them, and realizes their value, their worth deepens in his sight. That beholding leads the soul to exclaim at their wonder. Studying and contemplating them in this way strengthens obedience.

This keeping is with the whole soul in wholehearted loyalty. It is the response of the earnest seeker. Keeping them belongs with loving His commandments above gold, yea above fine gold, esteeming all His precepts concerning all things to be right, and hating every false way.

Keeping them is not bearing a galling yoke but willingly and cheerfully obeying in harmony with Christ and guided by His principles. Those who advance in harmony with the great standard of righteousness sing this as they walk in the way of happiness, making melody to God in their hearts.

Faithfulness When Law Despised

The verse describes the spirit of God's commandment-keeping people in the last days. It applies to Christ's followers, who continue to respect and obey God's commandments even when they are widely scorned and despised and made void. The contempt, disregard, and scorn placed upon the law amid growing obstinacy, rebellion, and apostasy only makes the love and reverence of the obedient for it grow more decided. That deepened love is expressed in loyalty to His commandments and love for His law despite opposition, as the response of the earnest seeker who recognizes their worth.

They raise the words in song together with the declaration that here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. By that singing with heart and voice they proclaim the third angel's message. This keeping stands against bold and defiant wickedness against God's holy law. It belongs to the time when the world's wickedness has reached the point at which the Lord will intervene and will certainly arise to punish it.

His great forbearance in the face of continual insult to His holy commandments is a marvel showing constraint of His own omnipotence and power. He has borne long with continual increase of defiance against the laws given to govern mankind while giving continual light to those who remain obedient. He sees that life is becoming intolerable through cruelty because men have changed His laws.
