Psalms 119:130

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

The entrance spoken of is the receiving of God's words into the heart, mind, soul and life, not merely reading or hearing them, and the light promised is guidance that makes truth plain and clears the path of righteousness, given to those who come with humble, teachable willingness to learn and obey. It is promised to ordinary, unlearned, poor and young people, so that lack of education or standing is no barrier to understanding. That light enters only when the heart is opened by surrender of every sinful habit and by humility, and as the Holy Spirit applies the word through earnest prayer. It is found through diligent study that lays aside preconceived opinions and compares Scripture with Scripture, and by receiving the word with faith and practicing it. When so received, the word expands and elevates the intellect, transforms the character, and guides plainly in duty and righteousness.

Meaning of Key Words

The entrance spoken of is not merely reading, hearing, or considering, but receiving God's words into the heart, mind, soul, understanding, life and character. Truth that only reaches the conscience brings uneasiness, but when planted by the Holy Spirit in the heart at the seat of the affections it brings the whole person under Christ's rule. It must be received with humility, prayer and reverence, taken in, prayed over, practiced and applied to the soul until faith and intelligent knowledge grow. The psalmist treasured the word in this way, receiving it into understanding and putting it into practice, so that it elevated thought and shaped speech toward what is pure and heavenly.

The light promised is guidance for life, truth made plain, and divine illumination that dispels moral and intellectual darkness and makes the path of righteousness clear. It defines the difference between right and wrong and truth and error, making the principles of righteousness clear to the student. To everyone who receives the love of the truth it shines as a light in a dark place through the word and the Holy Spirit moving upon the heart. The way is made so plain that even a simple and uneducated wayfaring person need not lose the way or remain in darkness.

The simple who receive this understanding are those who feel their dependence upon God and their need of counsel and communion with Him. They are humble and contrite, meek, lowly, teachable, childlike, with eyes opened to see wondrous things in God's law, willing to learn from Jesus and obey. Drawing near to God brings this illumination, and when the heart is opened and the will submits, the Holy Spirit applies the Word with precious light for spiritual and physical well-being. The term does not mean those weak in intellect, reason or good sense, nor those exalted in self-sufficiency, self-importance, originality or independence who consider themselves of such exalted understanding that they can improve the Scriptures above their present simplicity. Convincing evidence alone does not give this understanding if the will refuses to submit.

The promise belongs to ordinary, unlearned, poor and young people, so lack of education, book knowledge or status is no barrier. The Bible was given for all and not for ministers alone, and is the comfort of the poor, made for the soul. Its words are plain enough for the unlearned to understand, and when shared personally and humbly with love they meet objections and help the hearer understand the truth. A brother with few advantages in book knowledge may still be rich in rare wisdom and practical education in the knowledge of the truth, and none should set himself as critic to measure his usefulness and influence. Sincere seekers who earnestly desire to know God's will are not left in darkness but gain from Scripture far greater consolation and practical wisdom than learning alone gives, showing its power in life and character.

The opening of God's words brings light into the mind and soul and understanding to the heart, flooding the soul with glory through the Spirit and power of God. Repeating God's promises brings that light into the mind. Its truth, made powerful by the Holy Spirit, can bring even the lofty and heedless to know the truth, illuminating the way and teaching those who seek to keep the commandments. As seekers continue to know the Lord, this light grows brighter like the rising sun to the brightness of day.

Setting and Historical Fulfillment

The psalm to which the text belongs exalts God's law and word, declaring His testimonies wonderful and therefore to be kept by the soul. When received into the understanding and put into practice in the life, the word gives light and guidance, making the principles of righteousness clear and defining the difference between right and wrong and truth and error. Treasured in this way, its truth elevates thought and shapes speech toward what is pure and heavenly.

In the last days, when contempt is placed upon God's law, the commandment-keeping people who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus sing this declaration with heart and voice. Their fidelity, loyalty, and love for the law grow more decided as contempt against it grows, esteeming all His precepts right, hating every false way, longing for His commandments, praying for mercy and ordered steps and teaching and deliverance from oppression and from dominion of iniquity, and weeping because men keep not the law. Sung thus, love for the commandments above gold proclaims the third angel's message, for the entering of God's words brings light and wisdom to the simple. The same psalm is read with earnest voice before a large assembly to declare that the Lord will certainly arise to punish bold and defiant wickedness against His holy law after great and marvelous forbearance and long-suffering that has constrained His own attributes and held back His own omnipotence while giving continual light to the obedient, when life has become intolerable with cruelty because men have changed His laws. It is also the song of those in harmony with Christ, whose lives are guided by His principles and who keep His commandments willingly and cheerfully rather than as a galling yoke, advancing in harmony with the great standard of righteousness, walking in the way of happiness and making melody to God in the heart, regarding the law as light and delight and proving His yoke easy and His burden light.

The promise was fulfilled when Luther's preaching of the plain truths of God's Word and the Bible itself were placed in the hands of the common people and studied with deep interest. Rich and poor, learned and ignorant read it aloud at firesides, received it with gladness, and spread it from person to person, and among the Waldenses truth took hold of hearts to elevate and sanctify them. This study works a mighty change in minds and hearts, convicting souls of truth, arousing dormant powers, freeing minds from ignorance, purifying and ennobling the spiritual nature, and imparting new strength and vigor to the intellect, lifting people out of ignorance and degradation where religion had been only superstitious observance of forms with little part for heart and intellect. God gives understanding to those who seek the meaning of Scripture sincerely and prayerfully with the Holy Spirit's help, teaching and disclosing its truth so it is understandable even to the simple and unlearned.

It was fulfilled again when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples at Pentecost and after the resurrection. Then Scripture became clear and shone in a new light, changing their understanding of Christ's words. Simple truths spoken by previously unlearned disciples illuminated darkened minds and converted thousands, showing that understanding God's Word as living spiritual bread depends on the Spirit's work in mind and heart, not merely on studying it as an ordinary book.

The light thus given grows brighter as seekers continue to know the Lord, like the rising sun reaching the brightness of day for those who earnestly seek truth and follow God's will. Drawing near to God opens the eyes of the humble and contrite to behold wondrous things in His law, and its truths are gradually unfolded as they continue seeking, though the truth itself is not a new revelation. This heavenly light removes obscurity in Scripture and helps the humble learner see its meaning clearly, sharpening the memory so the word seems newly revealed when received intelligently with the spirit that inspired it and practiced in the life. So received, it guides the searcher along the narrow path and through the narrow gate toward the city beyond.

How Light Is Received

Light comes only when mind and heart are opened to let truth enter, and that opening is a conscientious surrender of every habit, practice, sin and wrong course that has shut truth out. Education, training, advantages, privileges, rootedness in theory, mere assent to the commandments, Bible knowledge, opportunities for instruction, or truth reaching only the conscience and ears while the heart is closed to divine knowledge give no real help unless truth is received and obeyed from the heart. True entrance is loving its pure principles, loving God supremely and neighbor as self, searching Scripture to know truth and God's will, receiving humbly with willingness to obey, so that it refreshes and changes the heart, inspires faith working by love, purifies the soul, reveals hidden treasures, and works with transforming power giving strength, confidence and efficiency. If a wrong course is held with provision to please and glorify self, lust cherished in the heart and a lie lived, truth held without transforming conduct loses its vitalizing power and sin strengthens.

Humility, teachableness, treasuring divine wisdom, obeying God's will, contrite heart, close self-examination against Christ's pure character, recognition of ignorance and inefficiency, overcoming selfish natural inclinations, and striving daily for close connection with Christ open the entrance. A humble teachable seeker, though lowly and apparently ungifted, if giving self fully to God as Moses did and obeying with loving trusting heart every intimation of His will, is led into rich unknown fields of truth, guided by the divine hand, purified, ennobled, energized, increased in capability and spiritual ability, entrusted with sacred commission, and enabled to honor God and bless the world. Self-importance, confidence in own ability, high estimate of ability, self-sufficiency, and contentment with superficial knowledge leave no room for instruction and enlightenment and leave little progress.

Understanding comes as the Holy Spirit applies the word to heart and conscience, quickens faculties without confusing them, makes rich hidden meaning plain, shines light on the Word free from prejudice and pride, and enables minds to see truth together through earnest prayer, humble searching, pleading for illumination and patience. Angels stand beside those who make Scripture their counsel to impress the mind and enlighten the understanding, and its divine counsels, admonitions, grace and wisdom must be heeded for cleansing from corruption. The word is interpreted by the Spirit written in a special manner upon the heart, not by mere reading or mere letter; its entrance is reception into the heart by the will of the human agent with divine power cooperating, and to mind and heart consecrated to God increased understanding is given as light is communicated to others.

The verse is fulfilled through diligent, thorough, methodical study rather than casual reading, laying aside preconceived opinions, commentaries, traditions and first impressions, proceeding regularly verse by verse, comparing Scripture with Scripture by marginal references and concordance, letting one passage unlock another, giving every word its proper bearing, comparing anything obscure with every other text on the subject until views harmonize with every collateral passage and apparent contradiction is harmonized. Thorough searching enriches understanding through varied truths, unity and plain language instructing every age and level of learning, and what was obscure becomes clear. So searched and made guide and counsel for life, Scripture fills the heart with love for the heavenly Father.

Light comes by receiving the word with faith and allowing it to shape life, for listening without faith or love for truth fails to gain light and progress, including in justification by faith. Repeating God's promises brings this light into the mind and educates in true faith. Reading with glad prayerful heart explains revealed things and helps understanding, and its spiritual light shared then illuminates others' path. Truth must be spoken clearly, slowly and forcefully so hearers understand and receive its life-giving message, with the Spirit impressing mind and convicting heart and conscience, and overloading hearers with too much matter erases that impression and prevents retention.

The word must have room to enter and be taken in daily as food, bread of life, counselor, guide and instructor, eaten, drunk, received, digested and prayed over and practiced, so souls grow in faith and intelligent knowledge, live by every word, are guarded from backsliding after blessing, are opened in understanding, made wise for this life and eternity, have Christ formed within, grow in Him, and sustain spiritual life and piety. Frivolous reading, trifling conversation and talk, worldly pleasure, pride and pursuit of earthly gain occupy heart and mind, narrow the heart, weaken judgment and block entrance so the word cannot give light and understanding, while devotion to God who alone is worthy of supreme devotion, an open honest heart, heeding counsel and admonitions to avoid past sins and cleanse corruption, and much more praying with less long sermonizing guard body and soul.

Effects of Divine Light

The entrance of the words gives light that strengthens the intellect, expanding, elevating, purifying and enlightening the mind. Study and searching develop its faculties, sharpen perception, ripen judgment, awaken dormant powers and energy, and give stability, patience, courage, hope, sound judgment and keen discernment. Continued learning brings greater illumination, and as seekers cooperate with God the Holy Spirit quickens the faculties without confusing them but developing talent. This contact with truth brings the mind into contact with the infinite mind, beyond what philosophy or human training can do, and helps the person see the duty to work out salvation with fear and trembling while God works within to will and to do, with angels close beside the searcher.

Received, believed, applied to the soul and obeyed, the truths have penetrating, assimilating, vitalizing and transforming power to convert the soul and fashion heart and church after the divine likeness. When truth takes hold of hearts it elevates, sanctifies, purifies and refines the soul through the Holy Spirit, expels idols, renews the heart, revives moral power that seemed paralyzed, refines taste and judgment, and ennobles the whole character. Humble people who devote their lives to God feel this power in the heart, and all who would be saved, high or low, rich or poor, must submit to its working and live in harmony with its instruction. Its light frees from ignorance and false teaching, nourishes with the bread of life and the water of salvation, and produces honesty, temperance, integrity and godly conduct that breaks the chains binding people to Satan.

The light is guidance for life to the sincere seeker, guiding plainly in the path of righteousness so that lack of education does not prevent understanding God's will. Study makes the principles of righteousness clear, defining the difference between right and wrong and truth and error, showing duty and what a person ought to be. Those enlightened value and keep the commandments, learn the fear of the Lord and departure from evil, receive hope and understanding of salvation, and are taught self-denial and faithful following of Christ. Reading the words alone does not accomplish their purpose; truth must enter the heart to produce the intended good and bring consolation and strength.

This entrance brings great peace to those who love the law so they are not offended, with joy, refreshment by God's presence, and meditation on the statutes that reveals their worth and wonder and leads the soul to keep them. The meek learner in Christ's school is freed from being ruled by reproach, neglect, contempt, or seeking worldly rank and honor, and gains courage to stand for truth and right despite scoffing and bitter opposition. Humbly asking what Scripture says brings satisfying teaching to rely on as the sure guide for work and eternal interests, with living testimony in the heart enabling the soul to resist Satan above human assertions. Yielding wrong habits to divine truth revives paralyzed moral power with stronger, clearer understanding joined to security in Christ, and health improves as that security grows, while the heart emptied of self and filled with Christ is filled with the Spirit in love one to another.

Those who receive understanding become agents of mercy and instruments of salvation, learning from God and equipped for service including as missionaries to their own people. Earnest seekers with humble, teachable spirit are led into rich fields of truth as yet unknown, and one who gives himself fully to God as Moses did is guided by the divine hand as truly as Israel's great leader was. Though lowly and apparently ungifted, obeying with loving, trusting heart every intimation of God's will purifies, ennobles and energizes powers, increases capabilities, broadens and sharpens understanding, and forms sound judgment and steady character. As the light received is opened to others and shared to illuminate their path, the Holy Spirit gives more light, clearer judgment, and fills the heart with joy, in contrast to those too self-sufficient to learn who remain content with superficial knowledge.

The light reaches even the most darkened mind and reveals human inefficiency and sinfulness, including in the most cultivated. The mind gains light by contact with truth rather than human opinions, for the law and the testimony define truth and enable testing of what is heard. As the Word illuminates the mind it makes clear that opposing theories cannot be harmonized with truth, and gives authority to Thus saith the Lord above human sayings, traditions and customs.

Doctrine and Scriptural Harmony

The entrance of God's words makes the way of salvation plain, showing how a sinner may come to God and be justified before Him, so that ignorance is no excuse. Christ as the divine Teacher reveals saving truth clearly amid moral darkness, and those who receive and obey His word are given power to become children of God. That light makes even the simple wise unto salvation when they open their minds to its truths. Through faith in Jesus even the most degraded, downtrodden, poor, and ignorant sinners whom Christ died to save are purified and sanctified and made trophies of grace, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, because the religion of Jesus never degrades but refines taste, sanctifies judgment, and fits the soul to receive that entrance. The light comes by the Scriptures that present law and gospel bound together in a perfect whole, impressed upon every open and contrite heart, and it is received not by mere nominal faith or theory or legal religion but by believing to a purpose that appropriates God's richest gifts, giving power to become sons of God and grace to give to others.

Becoming familiar with God's Word is the only way to learn the perfection of character God requires and how to live in obedience to His law. Those who follow Christ value God's commandments and keep them because the word enlightens them and illuminates the way for those who seek to keep them. The Ten Commandments hedge God's subjects from transgression, and obedience brings health and happiness, peace and joy. Its truth answers the claim that obedience to God makes a person foolish, since receiving the word enables even the simple to understand and live by God's commandments.

Scripture is given for instruction, adapted to understanding, consistent with itself, not defective or misleading, so apparent contradictions can be harmonized. What was obscure becomes clear when Scripture is studied with earnest prayer, comparing passages with related passages, letting one passage unlock another until views harmonize. Hard texts are explained by other portions when a person lays aside preconceived opinions and commentaries, studies methodically verse by verse no faster than the meaning unfolds, lets every word have its proper bearing, and prays earnestly for divine enlightenment. The whole Bible, Old and New Testaments together, is needed to unfold the gospel and is the treasure-house of wisdom teaching the fear of the Lord and departure from evil. The Bible is the unerring standard by which scientific ideas are tested, while rightly understood science and the written word shed light on each other.

The Holy Spirit shining upon Scripture opens the mind to understand truth, including the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and the other prophecies of the Bible. This light is received through Christ's mediatorial work by those who earnestly seek God, as God replaces human ideas and inventions with ideas that are noble and clear, illuminating the understanding and warming the heart. The simple who receive it are not the foolish but those who feel need of counsel from God, realize their weakness, and come to God for enlightenment. It is obtained by going directly to Jesus Christ, the light of the world, to have the lamp lit, and those who seek Him in sincerity and soul hunger for enlightenment never seek Him in vain.

Receiving God's words belongs to the highest education, which includes knowing God and Jesus Christ. The Word of God is essential to that highest education, not merely an addition to learning in science and literature. The Bible is an unmatched source of education: studying it ennobles thought, feeling, and aspiration and strengthens the mind, giving knowledge of God's will, human duties, and the way to improve this life and secure the future life. It develops character and prepares the soul for eternal life. Its opening enlightens the mind and calls for greater diligence in studying Scripture and the sciences, since closeness to God, the source of knowledge and wisdom, brings intellectual as well as spiritual benefit, and knowledge of God is essential education and the constant study of every true worker.

Application to Daily Life

The entrance of God's words gives light and understanding even to the simple, so ordinary people can and should search the Scriptures for themselves without waiting for ministers or learned men. The Bible was given to be understood by all, not by ministers alone, and it is the comfort of the poor, for the Bible and the soul were made for each other. Through the word and the Holy Spirit God moves upon the heart, shining as light in a dark place and making the path of righteousness so plain that even a simple and uneducated wayfaring person need not lose the way. Lack of education, learning, or science is no barrier and no excuse for neglecting Bible study, for the humble, sincere, uneducated person who earnestly desires to know God's will and prays from a sincere heart will not be left in darkness. Patient study with determination to understand its precepts brings conversion, far greater consolation and practical wisdom than learning alone gives, and power shown in life and character.

The Bible contains the highest and loftiest science and should be the main branch of education and first in schools, with nothing allowed to come between the book and the student as more essential, while the sciences keep their standard. Opening the mind to the Scriptures elevates mind and understanding, makes youth acquainted with history, and counters skepticism and infidelity, for even the highest education in all branches of book knowledge fails without a living connection with God. Knowledge is of great consequence only when put to right use to uplift humanity and work for conversion to the truth. In the home Scripture is to serve as the parents' daily guide, its principles taught continually and woven into children's lives as their rule for living so they need not err. Welcomed into the mind and soul-temple as counselor, guide, and instructor and brought into practical life, the word opens human understanding in a marked manner, makes men wise through time and eternity, reveals God in His word and providence to save a fallen world, carries the mind back to the beginning of all things, presents the mighty power of the gospel in simplest language to cut the chains binding men to Satan's chariot, and keeps students from backsliding after rich rays of divine light have come.

Prayerful, diligent, earnest study joined with much prayer keeps communication between God and the soul open, gives light and understanding even to simple minds, makes workers efficient, enables them to recognize God's voice, and unites their hearts with Christ as laborers together with God with whom angels communicate. Its truth is like gold not lying on the surface and is obtained only by earnest thought and study, which stores the mind with the most valuable knowledge like hidden gold, strengthens and expands the mental powers, and gives a true estimate of eternal things. A person with little education can grow in understanding by learning in Christ and humbly using the abilities already given, and as he uses them his mind expands. When its divine precepts are brought into daily life and the life is fashioned after God's great standard of righteousness, the whole character is strengthened and ennobled. When every church member studies the grand themes God has given and lets the word enter the heart, and when the bread of life is eaten and drunk, received and digested and prayed over and practiced with much more praying and less long sermonizing, souls grow in faith and intelligent knowledge with health of body and soul.

The simple to whom understanding is given are not those of weak mind but those whose hearts are humble and contrite and in whom truth is a living, active principle through which God can work. A teacher must first be a doer of the word held out to others, humbly opening the door of his own mind and heart to its instruction in meekness and humbleness of mind. Only then can he feed God's flock modestly instead of exercising power in an authoritative manner and leaving the sheep unfed, preaching the word and teaching others with the simplicity that marked Christ's teaching and holding truth in simplicity. The truth must be spoken clearly, slowly, and forcefully so the hearer can understand and receive its life-giving message, for when the Holy Spirit works through it, it impresses the mind and brings conviction to heart and conscience, while overloading hearers with too much matter can erase that impression and prevent retention. When Scripture is faithfully taught in its purity, darkness disappears and light shines in the hearts of those searching for truth, so they learn from God, accept truths that sanctify and uplift them, and are saved.

When God's word enters the understanding, heart, mind, and life it gives light and understanding, and the one who treasures it receives it into understanding and puts it into practice, elevating thought and shaping speech toward what is pure and heavenly. Receiving the truth means taking it in, praying over it, and practicing it, so that faith and intelligent knowledge grow and those who act on what they learn live in harmony with its instruction and have power to transform character. Seeking truth in Scripture ennobles the mind and sanctifies the person, whatever the position, for the simple are those who recognize need of communion with God, not people weak in intellect, and putting the word into daily practice leads to growth in character, knowledge, and wisdom. Welcomed as counselor, guide, and instructor and treated as essential wisdom, the Bible opens the understanding, expands, elevates, and purifies the mind, transforms heart and character, helps students live by every word of God, guards them from backsliding after receiving divine blessings, and makes people wise for this life and eternity. Neglecting the light it gives leads to sin and loss.

The verse is itself a prayer for God to make His word understood, and receiving that understanding refreshes the believer through God's presence and the filling of the heart with His Spirit. Those who humbly ask what Scripture says will find its teaching satisfying and can rely on it as the sure guide for work and eternal interests. Its living testimony brings truth to the heart and enables the soul to resist Satan, with a lasting authority that human assertions cannot match. This divine illumination belongs to a life in which sin is taken away, the heart is emptied of self and filled with Christ, and believers love one another as Christ loves them. Those who treasure and appreciate the living word, which is spirit and life, grow up into the full stature of man in Christ Jesus, understand more clearly with renewed heart the mystery of godliness and the working of Satan's corrupting principles, and in a world of apostasy, rebellion, false prophets, false doctrines, and strange voices pass them by as though hearing them not and are kept from becoming apostates and from being left as orphans.
