Psalms 119:158

I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.

The psalm to which this verse belongs exalts God's law, setting forth His Word as the rule of life that defines righteousness and distinguishes right from wrong and truth from error. The verse expresses grief felt in beholding transgressors, and that grief is because they do not keep God's Word. It is grief over a world whose wickedness is bold and defiant against His holy law and holy commandments.

The continual insult offered to the commandments, the perversity, the increasing defiance, and the changing of His laws given to govern human beings make life intolerable because of cruelty. God in great forbearance and long-suffering bears long with this defiance, restraining His own attributes, while giving continual light to those who remain obedient. The wickedness has reached the point where the Lord will certainly intervene and arise to punish it.
