Psalms 119:166

LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.

The verse joins hoping for God's salvation with keeping and doing His commandments. To hope for salvation is to trust in God's saving help while obeying Him. In the setting of the psalm, God's law is the rule of life, and His Word lays out the principles of righteousness and distinguishes right from wrong and truth from error.

This hoping and obeying belong together with loving God's law. That love gives great peace with nothing to cause stumbling. It belongs also with observing His testimonies and loving them exceedingly.

The verse holds out this hope and obedience when wickedness has grown bold and defiant against God's holy law to the point where the Lord will certainly arise to punish it. In that situation it reflects how very great God's forbearance has been toward continual insult to His commandments, constraining His own attributes with omnipotence exerted over Himself. He has borne long with ever-increasing defiance and perversity against the laws given to govern His created human agents. At the same time He keeps giving light to those who remain obedient, as life becomes intolerable through cruelty because men have changed His laws.
