Psalms 119:169

Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.

The prayer is a plea for the cry to come near into the presence of the Lord, asking Him to give understanding according to His word. It belongs to a psalm that exalts the law of God, holding up His word as the fountain of wisdom for the life. That word is the rule that defines what righteousness is and that separates right from wrong and truth from error.

Joined with Psalms 126 and 127, it declares that the wickedness of the world has come to the point where the Lord will surely step in to punish bold and defiant wickedness against His holy law. The defiance is open and determined, directed against the holy law itself. In that light it shows how very great the forbearance of God has been under continual insult to His holy commandments and under the ever-increasing defiance of the laws given to govern human beings.
