Psalms 119:2

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

True happiness belongs to those who treasure God's revealed truth by obeying it and who pursue Him with undivided affection. Keeping His testimonies means living uprightly under His law as the rule of life, turning from all wrong, diligently observing His precepts and judgments, delighting in His word as counselor, and holding fast to the way of truth. Seeking Him with the whole heart cannot be separated from that faithful obedience, for loving Him is shown by honoring His name in word and life and finding joy in doing His will. This obedient life is not bondage but liberty, proving His service good as believers walk cheerfully in His commandments, meditate on His law, and advance in happiness rather than selfish pleasure. Christ Himself lived this blessed way, finding His joy in God's word and ways rather than joining in wrongdoing, and even singing its truth amid toil and misunderstanding.

Keeping Testimonies Wholeheartedly

Blessedness belongs to those who keep God's testimonies and who seek Him with the whole heart, and faithful keeping joined to wholehearted seeking is the condition of the promise. Keeping His testimonies is walking undefiled in the law of the Lord, doing no iniquity, walking in His ways, and diligently keeping His precepts, statutes and righteous judgments. This is what it is to be upright in the way and to walk in the law of Jehovah. It is making God's law the rule of life and following His instruction by delighting in it as counsellor, choosing the way of truth, holding fast to it, running in the way of His commandments, walking in His ways, holding to His precepts, and learning and obeying His word.

Seeking Him with the whole heart cannot be separated from faithful obedience to His revealed requirements, for heeding His way, observing His law with the whole heart, and delighting in obedience belong together. Such obedience expresses love for Him and honors His holy name in words and in life. It is a virtue of the covenant of grace and the delight of the obedient child of God. Wholehearted seeking means reconversion and decided spiritual change through deep spirituality and perfect obedience to the law of the Lord. It is laboring under the supervision of the divine Teacher and under divine direction, refusing shallow spiritual knowledge, bringing frequent reflection, study and prayer into daily work, and making the first and last thought of the day whether God has been honored that day.

Keeping His testimonies comes by partaking of the clear pure truth of the Word of God as a deep wellspring from which all may drink freely, for the thoughts awakened by receiving the Word sanctify the soul into obedience. Those who pour out bitterness against the law of Jehovah are of another spirit, following Satan who first brought sin. Sin is transgression of the law of God, and numbers on Satan's side do not make sin anything but sin. The whole psalm exalts the law of God, whose principles of righteousness are plainly laid down there, clearly defining right and wrong and truth and error. It is a lamp to the feet and a light to the path, to be loved exceedingly and set before oneself, and even wise and prudent human counsellors are to be heard but never placed before the Word of God.

Blessing is the experience gained through this knowledge of the Word, joined to longing for the ways to be established to observe His statutes and to freedom from shame when respect is given to all His commandments. Diligent prayerful searching of Scripture helps walk in the light of truth.

Blessedness in Daily Life

Blessed are those who keep His testimonies and seek Him with the whole heart, and Jesus lived this blessed way by following God's ways rather than joining the conduct of other young people. His joy and attention were in God's word and ways, and He pointed to this to explain why He did not join the frolics of the youth of Nazareth.

Wholehearted devotion can be expressed in song and accompany patient, pleasant conduct, for Christ sang these words while working, even when He was misunderstood or blamed. The blessing proves that the service of the Lord is good and that His requirements are not a restriction upon liberty. Those in harmony with Christ keep His commandments not as a galling yoke but willingly and cheerfully, and as they advance in harmony with the great standard of righteousness they make melody to God in their hearts, walking in the way of happiness. This is the language of every truly obedient and sanctified heart, which delights in the path of God's commandments, loves His law, meditates in it all the day, seeks His precepts, observes His law with the whole heart, and walks at liberty. True happiness comes from obeying God's precepts and remaining faithful to principle, not from selfish gratification.

This obedience includes the small duties and courtesies of daily life, and a soul thus joined to God can flourish even amid unbelief and depravity. The whole person bears decided testimony in features, temper, words, and character, with positive words on the Lord's side and no evil report by sadness of countenance or ill-advised words.

This wholehearted obedience is contrasted with following human ways. It marks a faithful way of life by following His instruction, even when others mock it as strange or overly strict. Those who accept Christ find great reward in keeping God's commandments and walking in His ways. This devotion to God's law is expressed by the end-time commandment-keeping people, whose loyalty grows stronger as the law is held in contempt.

Children should learn as part of their religious training that God blesses those who faithfully keep His testimonies and seek Him wholeheartedly. God blesses those who obey His commandments and seek Him wholeheartedly, and diligent, prayerful searching of Scripture helps them walk in the light of truth.

The verse points out the sacredness of God's law. It is presented with solemn earnestness to declare that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will certainly interfere and will not acquit the wicked.
