Psalms 119:20

My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

The judgments longed for are God's revealed teachings and decisions, the teachings and decisions of His law. The longing is soul-breaking in its intensity, a breaking of the soul with desire that continues at all times. The psalm around it exalts God's law and presents His word as the rule of life, setting out the principles of righteousness and clearly defining right and wrong and truth and error.

This longing belongs to a desire to live by God's word and to keep His commandments. It goes together with diligent attention to Scripture and a desire to learn its righteous judgments, receiving God's word into the heart and living by it rather than treating it as mere human knowledge or studying it superficially. The longing is an example of earnest, fervent, even agonizing prayer and of sincere, earnest, affectionate desire for God. As David's wrestling prayer, it breaks the soul with desire for His judgments and stands in contrast to feeble, heartless lip-service prayers.
