I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame.
In this verse David clings firmly to God's testimonies and pleads with the Lord not to let that faithfulness end in shame. That clinging joins trust in God's word with a commitment to keep His commandments. The testimonies are his delight and counsel, and he keeps God's judgments before him rather than putting the words of human advisers above God's Word. In this way God's law serves as a guide for life, supplying the principles that distinguish right from wrong and truth from error.
The verse upholds the sacredness of God's law. It teaches that God bears long with people and cities, mercifully warning them during a period of probation, yet beyond that limit patience is exhausted and judgments are sure to follow persistent disobedience. In this light it declares that the world's wickedness in transgressing God's law has reached the point where the Lord will certainly intervene.
