Psalms 119:34

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

This verse belongs to a psalm that exalts God's law, where God's Word lays down the principles of righteousness and defines right and wrong, and where that Word is to guide life. It stands as part of a continued prayer to be taught the way of the statutes, to be made to go in the path of the commandments with delight, to have the heart inclined to the testimonies rather than to covetousness, to have the eyes turned from vanity, and to be quickened in righteousness.

It is a prayer asking God to give understanding so that His law can be kept and observed with the whole heart and with complete devotion. Understanding of God's Word comes as the humble seeker searches for truth and is taught by the Holy Spirit. The prayer expresses the penitent's consecration of both heart and mind to God in loving obedience and wholehearted service.

True obedience comes from God-given understanding and wholehearted devotion, joined to delight in going in the path of His commandments. It is the language of every truly obedient and sanctified heart, in contrast to bitterness against the law of God, which shows another spirit following Satan, who brought sin and rebellion by misrepresenting God's law. It is the prayer of those in harmony with Christ whose lives are guided by His principles, asking willingly and cheerfully and not as a galling yoke, advancing in harmony with the great standard of righteousness while making melody to God in the heart and walking in the way of happiness.

It shows the sacredness of God's law and keeping it with the whole heart, and proclaimed with solemn earnestness together with Psalm 126 and Psalm 127, it declares that the wickedness of the world has reached a point where the Lord will certainly interfere. It reveals the consecration God asks to be made, it is a prayer God's servants should continually offer, and it is to be studied by young men and women to encourage a spirit that desires to heed the way of the Lord.
