Psalms 119:42

So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

The psalm that holds this promise exalts God's law, pointing out its sacredness with solemn earnestness, and presents His Word and His testimonies as the believer's trusted guide and counsel. It is voiced where God's law is despised, and there the commandment-keeping people take up this psalm to declare their love for the law and their confidence in God's word. In that same psalm the law is upheld in connection with the declaration that the wickedness of the world has reached the point where the Lord will certainly interfere.

Confidence in God's Word rests on that Word's authority and guidance. To trust in that word furnishes a person with what to say in reply to one who mocks and reproaches him. Such trust belongs together with asking for God's mercies and salvation to come according to His word, hoping in His judgments, keeping the word of truth in the mouth, and keeping God's law continually forever and ever with the whole heart in delight and obedience and in seeking God.
