Psalms 119:48

My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

The verse belongs to a psalm that exalts God's law, presenting that law as the guide of life, with study of His Word setting out the principles of righteousness and making clear the difference between right and wrong and between truth and error. To lift up the hands to the commandments which are loved and to meditate in the statutes is to love God's commandments, delight in them, honor them, and reach toward them in loyalty and reverent devotion to obey them. It is to think on them continually with delight as statutes to be kept and worthy of meditation. This lifting and meditating is the language of every truly obedient and sanctified heart, and to the obedient child of God the commandments are a delight. Reflecting on the themes of God's statutes opens treasures to the student.

Obedience to God's law as described in the verse is not a yoke of bondage or a galling yoke and is not a severe restriction, and there is nothing to be ashamed of in keeping the commandments. This is because the Lord withholds nothing that is for good, while shame belongs to disobedience to His precepts rather than to obedience. The love and obedience expressed in the verse stand opposite to bitterness against the law of God, which follows the leadership of Satan, who first brought sin, which is transgression of the law, and who works to bring the world and much of the professed church into enmity with the law.

Lifting the hands to the loved commandments and meditating in His statutes means keeping His commandments willingly and cheerfully in harmony with Christ, with the life guided by His principles and advancing in harmony with the great standard of righteousness. It is melody to God in the heart while walking in the way of happiness and revealing Christ to the world as channels of light. Lifting the hands to the commandments stands together with seeking God's precepts, walking undefiled in the law, keeping His testimonies with the whole heart, keeping His law continually forever and ever, and walking at liberty. It stands together with keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, delighting in the commandments loved, and speaking His testimonies before kings without shame.

The verse belongs to the song of the last-day commandment-keeping people seen in Revelation 14, whose fidelity and loyalty to the laws of God's kingdom grow with the emergency, so that contempt placed upon the law only makes them reveal their love for that law more decidedly. They sing it with happy uplifted voices as their declaration of faith.
