Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.
The Lord himself is the believer's portion, and belonging to him is inseparably joined to a resolved commitment to keep his words. That commitment is expressed by seeking God's favor, by turning from one's own ways to his testimonies, by keeping his commandments without delay, by remembering his law amid trouble, and by giving thanks for his righteous judgments. The psalm exalts God's law, presenting his Word as sacred and authoritative, as the rule for life and the source of counsel whose principles are to be studied and followed.
He becomes one's portion when he is chosen and valued above everything earthly and temporary. Lands, houses, money, and the esteem they bring may win worldly honor, but they cannot give true character, while he is a lasting portion above anything the world can offer. Accepting God as the soul's portion above all the world offers is necessary for Christ's followers to be one with him as he is one with the Father. Choosing God as one's lasting portion goes together with true faith in Jesus and with treasuring truth and righteousness.
