Psalms 120:7

I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

The psalm that contains this verse was composed by David in the wilderness of Paran after the death of Samuel. At that time Saul was his enemy, and Samuel's death had removed restraint from Saul and left David feeling less secure. David therefore withdrew to Paran for greater safety while Saul was occupied with mourning for Samuel. There in desolate wilds he sang of his help coming from the Lord.

The psalm was also composed for the journeys of worshipers to the national altar at the annual feasts. It was sung by the people on those journeys. Together with the other journey psalms, its influence helped free Israel from idolatry.
