Father and Daughter Lift Their Eyes to the Hillsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 121:3

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

He never sleeps, grows weary, or stops watching, but guards His people continually day and night. He will not allow their foot to slip, stumble, or fall, so that those who trust in Him are kept from being moved or overcome. His keeping is active and constant, leading, upholding, sustaining, and preserving them at every step and guiding them safely through. This promise belongs to those who trust wholly in Him with a child's simplicity and abide in Christ, who may rest securely in His care and providence. When sight, memory, and experience cannot show the way forward, He knows the path and leads safely through difficulty, sorrow, trouble, and uncertainty, so He can be trusted with one's case and praised even in affliction.

God's Unceasing Protective Care

The verse voices confidence in divine protection in a time of grief and danger, when David was in the wilderness of Paran mourning Samuel's death while threatened by Saul. It declares that God will keep His own from falling and from being overcome.

Not allowing the foot to be moved means being kept from slipping, stumbling, sliding, and falling. It means being kept from being overcome and having one's spirit broken under hostile pressure. Trust in the Lord holds a person steady and unmoved.

The Keeper does not slumber, which means He never sleeps, never grows weary, and never ceases to watch. His guard continues day and night over those in His care. His watchful care never fails.

That keeping is active and constant: He leads, upholds, sustains, protects, and preserves at every step. He guides safely even when the way ahead is unclear and sight, memory, and experience cannot show the path, bringing those who trust Him through difficulty, sorrow, trouble, and uncertainty.

Living by Trusting Care

The promise belongs to those who trust wholly in God, who come to Him with a child's simplicity, and who abide in Christ, and they may rest in His care and providence. When the way ahead is unclear and sight, memory, or experience cannot guide, it gives confidence that the Father knows the way and will lead safely through difficulty, sorrow, trouble, and uncertainty. It assures aged, tried, and faithful ministers and servants that they remain under God's protection and are guarded day and night. It assures parents who faithfully correct their children that God is ready to aid them with His Spirit and grace and to reward their efforts.

It assured James White amid unjust criticism that if he trusted wholly in God he would be kept from being overcome or having his spirits broken, and hostile actions would not truly weaken his influence. It urges Kate to keep her hand in Jesus' hand, with the assurance that He will hold her securely and keep her feet from slipping. It presents the Lord as helper and advocate who can be trusted with one's case, so a person need not make concessions that would dishonor God. Because God is an ever-watchful guardian, a person can trust His care and praise Him even while afflicted.
