Father and Daughter Lift Their Eyes to the Hillsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 121:4

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

God is Israel's guardian, and Israel means all who are grafted into Christ, whom He watches over continually day and night without weariness, drowsiness or interruption. That Keeper is Christ, the true and faithful Watchman who never sleeps, slumbers or grows weary in guarding His people. He keeps them by His own presence walking among the churches and in every heart, for He has not left His church in human hands where its light would go out. He is constantly at work to carry His purposes forward in perfect order, frustrating the plots of the wicked and keeping His people safe amid conflict and upheaval among nations. His all-seeing eye is upon every person, act, purpose and secret thought, recording all for the judgment while giving time to confess and repent before patience ends. Because He never sleeps, the suffering, the aged, the weary worker and the traveler can rest trustfully in His care, receive His help at any hour, and praise Him for unseen guardianship.

Words and Historical Setting

"He that keepeth Israel" names God as Israel's guardian, and Israel means every person grafted into the true olive tree, Christ Jesus, who under God's care and guidance bear genuine fruit in Him. Joseph in exile prayed for this Keeper to be with him, trusting the One who never sleeps or grows weary in guarding His people. "Shall neither slumber nor sleep" means God keeps watch continually day and night without weariness, drowsiness, indifference, or interruption. He never grows weary or ceases to watch over and protect His tried and faithful servants, so that knowing they abide in Christ they can rest trustfully in His care and providence.

David sang this assurance while hiding in the wilderness of Paran after Samuel's death and while Saul was his enemy. He felt less secure without the prophet, and trusted God to guard him with a watchfulness that never sleeps or grows unaware. In Israel's wilderness journey Christ, present in the pillar of cloud and fire, kept watch over the camp, corrected the people, and encouraged them to trust Him to lead them safely to the promised land. Yet Israel murmured against Moses, their appointed visible leader, despite being under God's constant care that never sleeps. That day-and-night care still extended over them when they did not know it, while Balaam watched from nearby heights and sought a way to bring harm upon them.

God never grows weary or stops watching over those in His care, and He watched over His beloved Son. He provided Mary and Jesus with refuge in Egypt, using the gifts of the magi to supply the means for their journey and stay there.

Christ the Unslumbering Keeper

The Keeper named in the verse is Christ, the true and faithful and unwearied Watchman who never sleeps, never slumbers, and never grows weary in guarding His people. His vigilance is eternal, constant day and night without interruption or indifference. He keeps Israel by being present in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks, walking from church to church, from congregation to congregation, from heart to heart, and abiding among its congregations. There He stands as Watchman of the house and faithful and true Warder of the temple courts, the One who gave His life for the life of the world so that all who believe in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

He watches over churches and congregations and each separate soul even when undershepherds are asleep or occupied and distracted with lesser matters. God has not left His church in human hands and has not entrusted it to human agents, priests, or ministers. Under merely human care the lights would flicker and go out, so believers are kept by God's power and do not depend on an earthly priest or minister to be kept.

His presence and sustaining grace are the secret and source of all light and life to the church. Believers are kept by God's power through faith, and even that faith is God's gift. His continual care in walking among the churches is the pattern for undershepherds, who must seek light from Him and faithfully pass it on to those they serve.

Active Providential Working

The living God who keeps Israel never slumbers but is Himself constantly at work and awake to accomplish His designs. He is the great Master-Worker who Himself accomplishes the work and can therefore carry His great work forward harmoniously and swiftly to completion. Those who work for Christ are only instruments in His hands and must give all glory to His name, receiving talents and temporal and spiritual blessings not to hoard but to impart in cooperation with Him. What appears entangled and complicated to finite minds His hand can keep in perfect order.

He devises ways and means to frustrate the plans of the wicked, to thwart wicked counselors and men who plot mischief, and to bring their counsels to confusion. His work depends on divine power, not on finite messengers. He guards His people amid conflict, turmoil, and upheaval among nations, keeping them safe in His hands even when kings' strongholds fall and judgment strikes His enemies, remaining their strength and dependence in every crisis.

He stays awake over each worker and over the warfare carried on even under discouraging circumstances. He fits men, women, and children as He did Samuel to be messengers, choosing each one's sphere of labor in missionary work. All heaven watches, and angels are placed at the service of humble believing people, so the soul feeling its nothingness and relying wholly on the Saviour's merits is invincible. His presence preserves life, sustaining every step, heartbeat, and pulse, and awareness of that care brings peace and rest.

He remains awake and works while people sleep. He guards from unseen dangers and snares throughout life, and gratitude for this unseen guardianship belongs in every prayer with praise. He ministers through heavenly beings and sends light and warning to guide, so those who heed His warnings and trust His guidance rather than their own limited judgment will be safe.

Moral Witness and Judgment

The Keeper of Israel never sleeps or grows inattentive, and His all-seeing eye rests continually upon every person and every act. He sees every action, every purpose, and every secret plan, including schemes devised against His cause, and He reads every thought. Nothing done by any soul escapes that unceasing watchfulness.

Every deed thus seen becomes part of the record that each life will meet in the judgment. Angels follow the actions of men, nothing escapes their notice, and their faithful records expose wrongdoing and reveal the true condition of character. His eye sees every sin even when it is hidden from human sight. He measures the course of churches and of individuals, and His patience grants time to confess and repent while opportunity is given, so that sins may be pardoned and blotted out; but that patience will not last forever, and sins unrepented will be exposed in the day of God's wrath.

He is not asleep to the trials of His people, but knows their conflicts and sees them struggling against the combined powers of evil angels and evil men. Because He never sleeps or grows inattentive, those who know this truth are not to indulge impure thoughts or unholy deeds. Unlike men who are spiritually asleep and need to awaken and seek Him, He is ever watchful and can always be called upon for help. His constant watchfulness stands in contrast to Satan's activity while people sleep, and urges waking from spiritual sleep, breaking with Satan, and calling upon God.

Trust in Daily Life

Jesus never sleeps but watches continually for good over those who suffer, and He knows human pain and grief because He took humanity upon Himself and is touched by human weakness. His constant care is comfort through long sleepless nights when sleep and relief are absent, assuring sufferers that they are watched over without interruption.

He watches without weariness over His tried and faithful servants, keeping them under protecting care day and night until they lay down their armor. Aged and feeble standard-bearers remain under that care, and knowing they abide in Christ they can rest trustfully in His care and providence. His constant, unwearied watchfulness gives assurance amid perplexities, so His servants can work reasonably rather than feel bound to attend every meeting or exhaust their strength. They may keep strength in reserve and entrust burdens to Him with confidence and peace, trusting that He remains watchful. He does not grow weary or cease attending to those who serve Him, and He is ready with His Spirit and grace to help parents as they faithfully correct, care for, and guide their children, rewarding their efforts.

Trusting His protection from accident, harm, and unseen danger, travelers prayed and felt assured of protection through the night, and the same keeping supports prayer for the preservation of companions on a journey, as in prayer for Willie and his companions. His unseen guardianship protects throughout life from dangers and snares not even noticed, and gratitude for that care with praise belongs in every prayer. The psalm itself is a song for God's people to sing in worship with heartfelt understanding, giving voice to trust in His keeping care.

As Keeper of Israel He calls for self-denying, consecrated workers and will bless those who give themselves more fully to ministry, as in the blessing promised to Dores Robinson. As a shepherd He cares for each soul, watching His sheep and lambs day and night. He hears the humble praying person at any hour, freely gives blessing, and blesses those who seek Him wholeheartedly without turning them away.
