Father and Daughter Lift Their Eyes to the Hillsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 121:7

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The Lord promises to keep His people from evil and to guard their lives and souls safe. In the time of trouble He will preserve the righteous through persecution, distress, hunger and danger, shielding them by angels, supplying their needs and keeping their souls alive while judgments fall around them. This keeping does not spare them anguish and threats of death, but carries them through it until their appointed deliverance. The same care reaches the troubled in every place, guards travelers from harm and accident to a safe journey's end, and protects those who walk in the path He has marked out and do the work He has given. He also keeps the soul from being deceived by the enemy, which is sought by constant trust and prayer and gives confidence in His care through affliction.

Promise and Time of Trouble

The promise was sung by David in the wilderness of Paran after Samuel was dead and while Saul was his enemy, as assurance that the Lord would protect him from evil and preserve his life.

In the time of trouble the verse promises that God will preserve the righteous through persecution, distress, deprivation, hunger, lack of food, and danger, and will not leave them to perish. Angels will shield and guard them, their needs will be supplied, and their souls will be kept amid the suffering and judgments around them, even when the wicked die from famine and pestilence. This preservation does not mean the faithful are spared anguish, threats of death, or distress, but that they are preserved through it. Heavenly angels guard them and attacks against them are stopped as God permits, and he protects their lives until their appointed deliverance.

Preservation in Daily Life

The Lord can reach and help a troubled person wherever she is, preserving her from evil and guarding her soul even when under intense family pressure to abandon the truth. For travelers the promise is keeping from evil, harm, and accident in dangerous places, with that care sought in prayer and trust. After praying and entrusting themselves to God, travelers may feel assured He will keep them from accident and harm, for He watches over the journey and brings them safely to their destination. A safe journey without accident or injury illustrates protection by a kind Providence. God preserves and protects those who come to Him as helper and friend, His keeping power shielding them from harm in times of danger during travel, and this calls forth gratitude and praise.

God protects a person from all evil while that person does the work God has given and walks in the path the Lord has marked out, and He sanctifies that protection and its circumstances for the person’s highest good. The verse also promises preservation of the soul from being deceived by the enemy. This preservation is sought by trusting and praying to God at every moment and by asking Him to keep a person in all comings and goings. The assurance that the Lord preserves from evil and guards the soul supports trust in God’s care through affliction.
