Psalms 121:8

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

The promise was voiced by David in the wilderness of Paran while grieving Samuel's death and feeling less secure with Saul as his enemy, as his confidence in God's protection. Going out and coming in means all the ordinary movements of life and daily travel, including every departure and arrival throughout life. The preservation lasts from the present time onward forever, with the Lord continually watching over and preserving His people day and night for all time. Satan watches people's going out and coming in seeking to harm or destroy them, which stands in contrast to the Lord's promise to preserve them.

God is to be trusted continually to guard a person in all movements and to preserve the soul from being deceived by the enemy. The verse assures travelers who trust in God that He will keep them in their journeys from accident and harm. The Lord preserves a person in every journey, and His care can be trusted amid dangers such as wrecks and washouts with confidence that He will bring travelers safely to their destination. God's keeping power protects people in travels and times of peril, including travel through dangerous places, and travelers prayed for His care and protection especially when passing a perilous spot.

A safe journey without accident or harm shows this protection in experience, and this assurance gives reason for gratitude and praise. God's watchcare and presence are needed in daily travel, and the family needs angelic protection when going out and coming in as well as when lying down and rising up. God keeps children as they go out and come in, His angels are appointed to guard them, and parents should pray for His keeping and teach their children to follow His way. The assurance of continual preservation supports trust in God even in affliction.
