Pilgrims Enter the Gate of Jerusalem Gladlyby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 122:4

Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.

The verse pictures the tribes of Israel, the tribes of the Lord, going up together to Jerusalem for worship. That going up was to the holy city, to the house of the Lord, as part of the joyful worship belonging to Israel's annual feasts. Their purpose in gathering there was to give thanks to the name of the Lord, to the name of Jehovah.

On the journey these words were chanted with gladness by bands of pilgrims traveling to the house of the Lord, expressing joy and gratitude to the Giver of all good. Their thanksgiving exalted the glory and majesty of Jehovah in a chorus of thanksgiving swelled by hundreds of voices with trumpet and cymbals.
