122:6Psalms 122:6
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
The psalm belongs to the songs the children of Israel sang while going up to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. Bands of pilgrims chanted it as they journeyed toward the city, with hundreds of voices accompanied by trumpets and cymbals amid the gladness of nature. They sang it while looking at the hills around them where heathen peoples had kindled their altar fires. Its singing exalts the glory and majesty of God and expresses joy at going to His house, gratitude to Him as the Giver of all good, and thanksgiving to His name by the tribes assembled in Jerusalem.
Its singing declared that help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. It declared that those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved. It declared that as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people forevermore. It joins prayer for the peace of Jerusalem with prosperity for those who love her.
