Psalms 122:8

For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

Psalm 122:8 is one of the psalms sung by the Jews as they went up to the feasts at Jerusalem, making it a song of ascent. It belongs to the Psalms of Ascent sung by worshipers as they approached the city. As the holy city came into view, these ascent songs stirred spiritual truth and the spirit of worship.

The verse is a prayer for peace within Jerusalem. It is a blessing of peace upon the city and a wish for peace within it. The reason for the blessing and wish is for the sake of the speaker's brethren and companions. It is spoken out of concern for his brothers and companions and fellow worshipers. Peace in the city is thus bound up with the well-being of those who live there.
