Psalms 122:9

Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.

This psalm was the song of pilgrim caravans gathered from all parts of the land, journeying up on foot by short stages to Jerusalem for Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. They did not come empty-handed, but brought fruits and the fairest offerings to present to God. When the caravans reached the surrounding hills and came in sight of the holy city, with the smoke of incense ascending and the trumpets of the Levites heralding the break of day, they broke forth with reverential awe in this sacred song. The house of the Lord our God is the Jerusalem sanctuary, where His presence dwelt between the cherubim and His blessing rested daily upon His people. To seek the good of Jerusalem for the sake of that house is devotion to the city rooted in devotion to God Himself. That same devotion to God should mark all who visit His house now.
