Kneeling Maidservant Lifts Her Eyes to Heavenby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 123:2

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

Those who profess to follow Christ are to keep their attention fixed upon God without interruption, with the same close, dependent watchfulness with which household servants follow every movement of a master's hand and a young woman follows the hand of her mistress. That steady looking is the posture belonging to God's people, an attentive dependence that never turns away.

It confesses that human beings live in unceasing need of strength that lies outside themselves and beyond themselves. Those who look in this way lean their whole weight upon God for direction and upholding, for understanding what He wills and for power to carry it out. Such looking is vigilant prayerfulness, deliberately placing oneself under divine guardianship, since apart from that protection one will be mastered by the adversary. It asks continually what the Lord desires to be done, accepts His instructions with unquestioning trust, carries them out gladly and precisely, and devotes every ability to bringing Him honor. Whoever surrenders to the governing influence of the Spirit is made new and reshaped into Christ's likeness, yields the affections fully to God, is given light and vigor and holiness, and is made a conduit through which light reaches the world.
