Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
Without the Lord standing on the side of His people, the flood would have swept over them and the rushing current would have passed over their very life. The rising waters and the proud waters stand for odds too great for human strength, pressing in to drag down and drown the work of God. That unequal struggle was lived out at the Boulder-Colorado Sanitarium, where the gain of the summer season was eaten up by the winter months, when the patient count fell to fewer than a dozen at the very time running expenses were at their highest. Month after month the institution labored simply to meet its costs, and the strain brought days of darkness upon the workers who carried it.
To survive such waters without being overwhelmed is proof of God's care over His own work. Even through darkness He leads and guides His people, allowing hardship for a wise purpose while holding back destruction. Along the way He gives frequent and abundant evidences of patient endurance and tender, watchful care.
