Psalms 130:6
My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
The soul waits for the Lord with deep, patient, earnest and intense longing that is greater and more eager than that of watchmen waiting for morning, expressing persevering and expectant desire. That waiting is earnest, watchful waiting for the Lord, like watchmen eagerly waiting for morning. It rests on hope in His word and on confidence that forgiveness is with Him, that He shows mercy and redeems from iniquity, since no one could stand if He kept account of sins. God's people can make this hope their own in response to His goodness and love, watching and hoping for the Lord with persevering expectation.
The one nearest to Him waits with little confidence in self and strong confidence in God, who is able to save completely all who come to Him. In sorrow and darkness, when hope seems to fail and despair comes, waiting for the Lord means depending on God and submitting to His will, asking for patience to endure and grace to overcome rather than demanding that the trial be removed. That watchful waiting is directed toward Christ's second advent and is joined with hope in the Lord. Those who steadfastly watch for the Saviour's appearing, longing for it more than watchers long for morning, are numbered among those sealed for God's protection.
The image was fulfilled in the Bohemians enduring persecution while looking in hope to the promised day of deliverance, sustained by the words of Huss and Jerome that a century must pass before daybreak. A remnant lived to see the churches of the Brethren grow and enjoy comparative rest. God's people are still called to make this hope and watchful longing their own in response to His goodness and love.
The verse appeals to its hearers to hope in the Lord, to walk in His way, and to declare His truth. The longing of weary watchers for morning applies to seeing God's people undertake new work through living faith made active by the Holy Spirit.
