This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.
This is His everlasting rest forever, the place He has chosen and desired for His dwelling, where He abides between the cherubim in Jerusalem. Because He has so chosen it, the ark of the covenant as the symbol of His presence belongs there, and neither priest nor king has any right to remove it from its appointed place without divine authority. The ark and the sacred statutes enshrined within it embody the will of the divine Sovereign, serving as the constitution of the realm and the foundation of its prosperity.
That presence secures success only when heart and life are in harmony with the divine precepts; otherwise its removal for human ends brings disaster rather than success. The appointed ruler stands under solemn responsibility to set God's glory and the good of His people above personal interests, and above his own deliverance or victory. Conscious of guilt, David therefore accepted Absalom's conspiracy as God's just judgment in fulfillment of the sword pronounced against his house, and left the outcome with God.
