How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a strange land?
The verse gives voice to the grief of exiled captives who feel they cannot sing the Lord's song in a foreign and strange land. Its image of Zion's harps hung on the willows shows how songs of praise can be silenced. In contrast to those captives, God's people now are called to sing the songs of Zion as a living testimony to victories won through earnest prayer.
The songs of Zion can be sung when tempted as a weapon against discouragement. They should be learned by heart so they can be sung even without an instrument. When selfishness withholds God's message from people, praise is silenced, but a true missionary spirit and loving work to save the lost will restore the songs.
